boy hold mouth in pain

At Generations Dental in Grande Prairie we provide urgent care for emergency dental situations. Please call our emergency dentist at (587) 803-4406 if you are experiencing an issue right now.

In our practice, we consider a dental emergency any situation where you are experiencing discomfort or pain, and reserve time in our daily schedule for these scenarios. Call us today and we will try to fit you in!

The most common emergencies that patients call for:

Suffering a toothache

  • First, call our dental office, explain your symptoms and we will see you as soon as we can. To help ease any pain, take pain medicine that has been ok’d for use by your doctor or emergency dentist. You can also hold an ice pack against your face on the spot of your pain.

A chipped, cracked, or broken tooth

  • Don’t panic, teeth that have been broken may need just a simple white filling. Sometimes broken teeth may need further treatment such as a crown (cap). A crown helps strengthen the tooth and keep it from further cracking in the future.

Knocked out tooth

If you have an adult tooth that has been knocked out, you should act very quickly. You or the dentist may be able to place the tooth back in the socket predictably.

  • First carefully clean the tooth, being careful not to touch the root surface. Place the tooth back in the socket and approximate until it looks normal. Then give us a call and head straight for our office as further treatment is needed. If the tooth has been replaced in less than 10 minutes, it has a good chance of taking.
  • If you can’t replant the tooth back in place, put in a container of milk and head directly to our office. Please have someone call to let us know you are coming so we can be prepared to help you as quickly as possible.

Badly bitten tongue or lip

  • If there is bleeding, use a clean cloth to press down on the part of the mouth that is bleeding. Applying ice can also help slow bleeding and keep the swelling down. Head to your nearest emergency room right away.

Loose crown, filling or bridge

  • Call our dental office first. You can try putting a piece of sugarless gum over the spot to help secure the restoration for a short time.

Experiencing an infection or an abscessed tooth

  • These conditions are often very painful, but not always. It is important to get help right away as these issues will not resolve on their own, and with time may spread to other parts of your body. These are dangerous and must be treated quickly.

You can reduce your risk of a dental emergency with a regular yearly exam.
